Immediate Dentures

Smiles & Beyond Denture Clinic can assist you with immediate dentures in Edmonton

When natural teeth can no longer be saved and extractions are required, this denture is placed into the mouth immediately after the extractions are completed. Immediate Dentures are referred to as surgical dentures or same-day dentures.

An immediate denture is the first full denture a patient will receive. Immediate dentures are fabricated to replace the loss of natural teeth and inserted immediately after the removal of the natural teeth by the dentist. Naturally, any loss of your natural teeth is bothersome, but it happens to many of us. Fortunately, dentures have come a long way in the past 2 or 3 decades, and Smiles & Beyond Denture Clinic in Edmonton uses quality materials when making your denture. With immediate dentures, we are able to record your existing bite and redesign your new smile through a tooth selection process, and using the natural contours of your mouth to find the best fit possible.

Advantages to having immediate dentures:

- The patient can usually carry on daily obligations without interruption

- Immediate dentures control bleeding and swelling and act as a splint

- Protect the gum ridges from trauma and outside sources of debris

- Allows the patient to adapt to the new dentures while healing is taking place with marginal discomfort

Although the advantages of immediate dentures exceed the disadvantages, one cannot overlook these primary disadvantages:

- More office visits are required for adjustments, especially during the first few weeks after insertion

- There is no opportunity to observe the appearance of the denture before insertion, therefore

the denture cannot be fully assessed until insertion is complete, sometimes resulting in

    less favourable results

It is important that you see us the day after insertion, depending on how you feel, to have the new placement assessed. You should not remove the dentures for at least 24 to 48 hours after extractions, then remove and clean the dentures with mild soapy water or a denture cleaner and rinse the mouth with a warm salt water solution to promote healing. Expect some swelling and discomfort, your denture will feel foreign in your mouth, the bite and fit may feel off. Make sure to take any medication that is prescribed. A diet of softer foods in the beginning is highly recommended; as is chewing slowly and allowing yourself time to adjust to eating with your new dentures. It will take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks for the extraction sites to heal sufficiently. During this time the denture will start to feel like it is getting quite loose. Adjustments are often necessary, along with temporary liners to make the denture feel secure and comfortable. When tissue has completely healed (which may take up to a year), only then should a permanent reline be done, sometimes even a new denture, since the severity of the healing process varies from patient to patient. The cost of a permanent reline is not included in the cost of the dentures. Please give our office a call if you have any questions or concerns.

At Smiles & Beyond Denture Clinic, we include your immediate dentures with 2 free temporary liners per denture, and free adjustments up to 3 months.

In complex cases where the patient has an excessive amount of bone, there may not be enough room for artificial tooth placement. In-order to make the acrylic teeth fit the denture base, we are required to place shorter teeth to prevent your dentures from being too big for your mouth. Many times, this may cause your denture to not look as good as we hoped. Cases like this require a replacement set. That means your immediate dentures will be a temporary set, and a final set will be fabricated 6 months to 1 year after extractions. You will be notified if you are a candidate for temporary dentures during the consultation appointment, and will be notified of additional charges.
